During the first three Sundays of each month, you have the opportunity to buy grocery cards in the office after service. You can buy cards for the following month and pick up the ones you ordered last month. Remember, the discount we earn from purchasing cards in bulk from Giant, Stauffers, and Weis provide food for the Saturday Breakfast downtown once a month. Helping others is easy, as well as a wonderful thing!
The COA Book Club meets every second Tuesday of the month at 2:00 pm in the Parlor. On Tuesday, January 9th, we will discuss Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. We are happy to have new people join us! If you have any questions, please contact Clara Kosmela at (717) 569-9960.
Our next Wishing Well ministry will be to collect donations for the Day of Smiles, which is an annual day of giving to five charities in memory of the short, but fulfilling, lives of Erin and Max Nusbaum. Donations will be collected for Milagro and Clare Houses, Mom’s House, Brereton Manor, and the Pet Pantry of Lancaster. All of these recipients provide wonderful services to our local community. Please consider donating by taking a Smiley Face from one of the two posters (above the Wishing Well and on the Outreach bulletin board), buying that item listed, and putting it in the Wishing Well by February 4th. If you have any questions, please contact Jane McCartney at (717) 392-4844.
Would you like to greet and welcome others to our church between services from about 10:15-10:45 on Sundays? The frequency can suit your schedule, but most volunteers serve every 4-6 weeks. You will be provided with a brief orientation. Please call Donna Carr at (717) 475-5285 if you are interested or have questions.
Mission to the Homeless: January 21st
“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”
This month, we will be collecting our annual Mission to the Homeless Special Offering. Over the years, this offering has helped support the efforts of local and national nonprofits who assist those who struggle with homelessness in one form or another. Locally, Claire House, Milagro House, Water Street Mission, and the Winter Overnight Shelter have previously been recipients of funds from this offering. Nationally, we have donated to the efforts to reunite Central American children with families already living in the United States.
This year, thanks to the generosity of the congregation in 2017, Outreach voted to support Transitional Living Center (TLC) with a $1,000 donation and the UCC’s Hurricane Disaster Relief efforts with a $500 donation. Helping individuals, couples, and families develop self-sufficiency skills and attain housing stability, the Transitional Living Center is the only homeless shelter in Lancaster that allows families to remain together. TLC also has the Veteran’s Victory House program that specifically focuses on the needs of veterans experiencing homelessness. Harvey, Irma, and Maria made a very compelling argument for donating to the UCC Hurricane Disaster Relief fund. In a little over a month, those three hurricanes caused extensive damage in parts of Texas and Florida, and devastated Puerto Rico. The UCC Disaster Relief efforts have been present from the beginnings and continue to help with recovery.
Would you like to paint your own painting with all supplies and instructions provided for you, and enjoy a time of fellowship? Parish Life will be hosting an acrylic painting event on Sunday, February 25 from 2:00-4:00 pm in rooms 305 and 306. Everyone will paint the same seasonal 16 x 20 painting design. The cost is $25 per person. If you are interested in attending, please make your check out to Church of the Apostles and bring it to the church office by Friday, February 9. In the case of inclement weather, the snow date will be Sunday, March 4 from 2:00-4:00 pm. If you have any questions, please contact Clara Kosmela at (717) 569-9960.
