The Academy of Arts & Sciences is an inclusive Community Service Program of the Church of the Apostles founded in 2011. We care about nurturing a love of the arts and learning through offering music lessons, art classes and opportunities for the performance and display of the musical and visual arts.
We offer courses for adults through Heritage & Horizons. This semi-annual series of seminars (fall and spring programs) is now in its second quarter-century of providing quality courses in matters of interest to our community.
In the Spring of 2014 we hosted the First Annual Lancaster County Handbell Choir Festival.
We started in November, 2011 with two music teachers. We now have 10 music teachers offering lessons in piano, drums, guitar, string, woodwind, and brass instruments.
Periodically, we host recitals featuring our students. With participants ranging from young children to adults, it was a wonderful celebration of music and of the hard work necessary to perform. Additionally, we are fortunate to be able to include many of the fine art works of our watercolor class which added a splash of color to our beautiful sanctuary. It was a resounding success!
We are presently offering a class in watercolor painting on Tuesday mornings, Thursday evenings, and Friday mornings. This eight-week, three-hour per week course provides training and encouragement for all levels of skill and experience. There is a minimum age of 15 for participants.
Lastly, we are overjoyed to announce that due to the success of our music lessons during the past year, we are going to be able to offer scholarships for the upcoming year. We are working out the details, but the desire is to be able to offer at least one of these scholarships to a traditionally marginalized individual from the City of Lancaster. To that end, we are also starting to accept donations of instruments in good condition. So please, search through your attics and basements and if you have an instrument that is no longer being used, consider donating it to our program.

The Heritage & Horizons Fall 2017 series – “Celebrating 30 Years of History, Science, Literature, Religion, Community Services, and Music!” – will be held on Tuesday mornings from October 3-October 31.
For over a quarter-century, Heritage & Horizons has provided educational opportunities for adults in Lancaster County. Each fall and spring, a committee of dedicated volunteers has organized classes that, for a modest registration fee, are open to all adults in Lancaster County. Each series runs on Tuesday mornings for approximately one month. All sessions take place in the sanctuary of Church of the Apostles UCC, which is fully accessible and has plenty of free off-street parking available.
For more information about our course offerings, to register, or to be added to our mailing list, please call the church office at (717) 392-5718 or contact Dr. Cathie Oliphant, Planning Committee Chair, via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to seeing you!
