Art

A wide variety of media is introduced to give children the opportunity to experience the joy of process-oriented art. Some examples of favorite activities include easel painting, finger-painting, print-making, water colors, and collage. Fine-motor skills, visual perception, and creativity are reinforced.

Centers

Children choose among a variety of areas such as housekeeping; dress-up; blocks; cars, trucks, and trains; dramatic play; and texture table. All of these centers focus on increasing the children’s social, emotional, small motor, language, and cognitive skills.

Circle Time

The focus is on the theme of the week, letter of the week, calendar, weather, seasons, and conversation. Circle activities are designed to stimulate thinking and expand attention spans. Activities such as table games, puzzles, and manipulatives build social skills, hand-eye coordination, as well as counting, sorting, and classifying skills.

Gym

During inclement weather, we use a large, carpeted gym. Bikes, climbing structures, balls, scooters, balance beams, obstacle courses, the parachute, and group games continue to reinforce large motor as well as social skills

The Janet Rader Memorial Playground provides a fenced-in play-yard with new playground equipment, made possible by donations from Preschool Parent Council activities, church members, and grants. Children enjoy climbing, balancing, sliding, throwing, and running, all of which develop large motor skills.

Music

In the Music Room, children’s listening skills are developed, as well as creative expression and social skills. Concepts of sound, volume, tempo, and rhythm are explored through creative movement, marching, dancing, rhythm instruments, and singing games.

Snack

A group snack-time is provided daily, giving the opportunity to encourage good eating habits, appropriate manners, and time to converse with friends. Snacks are provided by the school, with parents donating holiday and birthday treats.

Story-time

Story-time is designed to help children develop an appreciation and enjoyment of literature. Reading activities enhance children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills, and also expand their knowledge base.

Library

Once a week, each class visits the church’s Children’s Library for story-time and to check out a book to enjoy at home.
