Outreach Projects
Did you ever wonder what exactly we collect at COA and where these collections take place?
Our largest collections for special ministries take place in the LARGE Apostles Caring Cart which is in the Narthex near the couches and coffee bar. Those collections change throughout the year with various ministries that we do for community and global outreach. Please check out some of our past Caring Cart collections below and our other collection ministries.

Warm Wear for Winter: Coat Collection
As the cold weather approaches, we are excited to continue our tradition of collecting coats and warm winter gear for those in need. Starting in October, we will be accepting donations of gently used or new coats, gloves, mittens, and hats to support individuals and families in our community.
This year, our collection will benefit several local organizations:
· Children’s coats and gear will be donated to students at Wheatland Middle School and Martin Elementary in the School District of Lancaster.
· Men’s coats will go to The GateHouse in Lititz, a non-profit addiction recovery center that has specifically requested sizes Large, XL, and XXL.
· Women’s coats will be donated to a local women’s shelter to help provide warmth and comfort during the colder months.
As you clean out your closets or upgrade your winter wardrobe, consider donating your gently used items to this great cause. Donations will be accepted from the beginning of October until the end of February and can be placed in the tall white laundry basket under the Outreach bulletin board near the hospitality table. Thank you for giving the gift of warmth to those in need this winter season!

Back-To-School Supplies
In July, our amazing congregation decided to support local students at the Back-to-School event on August 18th at Clipper Magazine Stadium. We were tasked with collecting 2-pocket folders and glue sticks, and our congregation filled the cart with 285 folders and 475 glue sticks! We are truly blessed to give back to our community through these generous donations. Thank you all!
Period Packs Project
Thank you to everyone who generously donated women’s hygiene products for our recent collection! With your help, we were able to distribute these essential items between the Lancaster County Food Hub and Water Street Mission, providing much-needed support to those in our community. Your kindness truly made a difference!
Hershey Mill Home
A big shoutout to our wonderful Church of the Apostles congregation! Thanks to your generosity, we’ve filled the caring cart with personal supply donations for Hershey Mill Homes, supporting mentally challenged adults over 55. Your kindness knows no bounds, and we’re deeply grateful for your compassionate hearts. Rev. Kuhn blessed these donations on April 28th. Thank you, once again, for your incredible generosity!
Warm Winter Gear Drive
As the winter season comes to a close, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to our Warm Winter Gear collection for the students of Wheatland Middle School. Thanks to your generosity, students were equipped with essential winter items such as coats, scarves, hats, gloves, and more to stay warm during the cold months. With our collections now officially wrapped up for this season, we encourage you to keep this initiative in mind during your spring cleaning. If you come across any gently used coats or winter gear, hold onto them until our next collection in the fall. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of students in need within our community.

Gifting Ministry for Martin Elementary School
Church of the Apostles UCC Spreads Joy with Christmas Gift Collection for Martin Elementary School
In the spirit of holiday giving, Church of the Apostles UCC, located at 1850 Marietta Avenue, embraced the season of generosity by collecting and distributing 60 Christmas gifts for the children of Martin Elementary School. Congregation members enthusiastically signed up to shop for a child, and on Sunday, December 17th, the lobby was filled with beautifully wrapped presents, each a testament to the church’s commitment to fostering joy within the community.
The heartfelt effort reached its peak on the following Tuesday when the meticulously chosen gifts were delivered to the excited students of Martin Elementary School. This initiative is part of Church of the Apostles’ long-standing tradition of blessing children throughout almost 20 years, embodying the core values of compassion and community service.
At the heart of this meaningful endeavor is the church’s newly reformed Vision and Mission: “God’s love guides us to include people as they are, serve compassionately, and champion social and environmental justice.” The Christmas gift collection for Martin Elementary perfectly aligns with these principles, reflecting the church’s dedication to inclusivity, compassionate service, and advocacy for justice.
Church of the Apostles UCC extends an invitation to all interested individuals to join their Sunday worship services at 10 AM. By participating in these gatherings, you become part of a community that actively lives out its vision and mission, embodying God’s love through service and advocacy.
In the true spirit of the season, Church of the Apostles UCC continues to be a beacon of love, inclusivity, and compassion, making a positive impact in the lives of those they serve.

Crocs for Kenya
Our next collection will be CROCS FOR KENYA! We are collecting donations of crocs and other items for the kids (ages 4 to 16) at ABBA’S HOUSE which is a Christian Orphanage and school for children in Kenya. There are 250 kids attending this school and can use many donations. We are collecting crocs, socks, underwear, pens/pencils, jump ropes, children’s vitamins, band-aides, and children’s Tylenol. We are also collecting gently used or new long skirts for the girls. If you would like to make a monetary donation to ABBA’S HOUSE, please make a check out to COA and write ABBA HOUSE on the memo line. The school is hoping to get funding for solar panels to run their water pumps. They not only supply water to their school, but to many in their community. What wonderful work ABBA’S HOUSE does for their very poor community in Kenya! Thank you for your generous support of all of our outreach ministries!
Abba’s House 2023
On Monday night June 12th the Outreach Commission heard a compelling presentation by Pastor Simon Muhota and his wife Margaret. They are the directors and founders of ABBA’S House and Christian Academy in Kenya, Africa.
ABBA’S House was founded in 2007 as an orphanage and has grown to include an academy from pre-school through 7th grade. Many of the students have gone on to higher education. These teachers often comment on the students’ readiness for the challenges of a higher education.
We have supported ABBA’s House in the past. Now they are seeking funding from various partners to help purchase solar powered panels to operate the well and provide water at no cost to them and the community because electricity in Kenya is unregulated and extremely expensive.
Any support that COA can provide through prayers and finances is much appreciated. For other ways to donate look for more information from the Outreach Commission on the items that are needed for the children.
Donations to Healthy Beginnings at Women’s & Babies
You are all very generous and kind! We collected SO many donations for the Healthy Beginnings Plus program moms and babies! We filled a trunk and a backseat with WONDERFUL donations! The staff is thrilled. We are still going to collect through the remainder of this month and take the additional items in June. Once, again thank you to all who donated to this successful Baby Shower!
Donations to Neighbors in Need
Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion in the United States. It is based on James 5:4. “Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The wages you held back cry out against you. The cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.” One third of this offering supports the Council for American Indian Ministry. Two thirds is used to provide grants to UCC church organizations as well as supporting a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts and direct service projects. Decisions on projects are based on resolutions that were passed at our General Synod meeting. Many churches collect the offering on October 2 as part of World Communion Sunday, but contributions may be given through the month of October. You can give your offering in the special offerings envelope or through Realm.

Treats for Heroes
Donations of snacks were collected in January and February, and delivered in March, for health care professionals at Lancaster General Health.
Below is a “thank you” from Don Berkow,
the Department Chair of Emergency Medicine at LGH.
“Dear Church of the Apostles,
A much belated thank you for your kindness providing much enjoyed snacks to my department last month. The emergency department like everyone else has faced a tough several years with the pandemic. Something as basic as a bag of chips can really make a positive impact on a bad shift and your gift did that for many of the Staff! Please let the members of your congregation know how much this was appreciated.”
Don Berkow, MD Chair of ED LGH
Adopt-a-Classroom

Many thanks from Sandi, Kathy, & Jeremiah”

Community Clean-Up
At various times, Outreach and the Youth Group would deploy an invitation to help pick up trash along Good Drive. Volunteers would meet at the parking lot of Community Aid and end the evening with a meal together in the Youth Center. All help is always greatly appreciated. Let’s team up to clean up!
Day of Smiles
This ministry collects donations for the Day of Smiles, which is an annual day of giving to five charities in memory of the short but fulfilling lives of Erin and Max Nusbaum. Donations in the past were collected for such charities as Milagro and Clare Houses, Mom’s House, Brereton Manor, and the Pet Pantry of Lancaster. All chosen recipients provide wonderful services to our local community. Please consider donating to Day of Smiles by taking a Smiley Face from one of the two posters (above the Wishing Well and on the Outreach bulletin board), buying that item listed, and putting it in the Wishing Well when the next Day of Smiles occurs (date to be announced in the bulletins and newsletters). Thank you so much for your support of all of our outreach ministries. We are able to help so many with your kindness!
