 As I was preparing this week, the last couple of weeks, really, and thinking about what should be said about the magi and about this story, kind of racking my brain honestly.

Because a lot of sermons for a very long time have been preached on all of these texts. But specifically this one, you know, we talk about the magi, the wise men, every year. I thought I knew, uh, from the beginning that I wanted to do something a little different and that I wanted to make it about sharing our gifts. I had every intention of sitting down last night and writing an amazing sermon. Then I had an anxiety attack at work, so my night ended up being blown out.

I thought we were just gonna share gifts. So I’m going to share some of my gifts with you this morning and talk about the gifts that we all have that we can share with the world and with one another.

One of the things that popped into my head this week was that the Magi were not people that Mary and Joseph would’ve ever met under any other circumstances.

They were from a distant land. They were these mysterious figures. We have all kinds of theories about who they are, but I’m not sure anybody is 100% sure who these people were. From the very beginning of Jesus’ story, it was about drawing in people who weren’t already included.

We talked the other week about the shepherds and how they were people who were ostracized by society, and this week we’re looking at these foreigners who are mysterious and strange. Probably didn’t have the same religious beliefs as Jesus’ family did. To me, that says a lot. Even in the Old Testament, when Abraham initially received God’s covenant, it was about becoming a blessing to the whole world, and how Jesus was sent to be that blessing to the whole world, to include those who hadn’t been included.

Which also had me thinking about my own journey and my own experience of not being included, and finding places where I am included and where my gifts can be used and expressed. Most of the time when I step up to this microphone, I’m talking about those things, but they’re very important to me, and I know that they’re important to you. In the sense that they were important enough for you to take a vote. One of the questions that we had during our Q&A session was, “Why is it such a big deal that we make a public statement? Why is it such a big deal that we become official and make this statement about being open and affirming?”

One of the things that I talked about was that for a lot of people, we have been publicly excluded. So, we’re unsure whether we’re welcome or not. Even if we feel welcome when we walk through the doors, we don’t know if we’re 100% welcome. I can walk in, and I can sit in your pew, and you can all be super nice to me, and we could even have dinner together, or I could join a small group, or any of these things. But if I want to go the next step and use my gifts for the service of the church, if I wanna serve on a ministry team, or if I wanna serve on the board, or if I want to be a pastor, that’s a whole other level of whether or not I’m included. To be in a place where I know that I can use all of my gifts, where I can bring my gifts, is a really amazing thing. I wanted to say thank you to you for that gift.

It’s all tied together. When I was struggling to find a place where I could use my gifts, it made me feel like I didn’t have any because they weren’t acceptable.

That reminded me of a song, and I’m gonna play that song, and I’m hoping you guys will sing along with me.

Then He smiled at me,

That was one of the songs that popped into my head this week as I was thinking about gifts. How the gifts that we bring all look very different. Another part of the story is that Mary was very much the one who brought the gift. She carried the ultimate gift for nine months and brought it, and the world has been ever blessed by it.

Earlier in the season, when we were on Mary’s Sunday, as Pastor Kathryn called it, there was a song that I was reminded of that I have fallen in love with. I had asked her if we were planning to do it, and she said, No, because the congregation doesn’t know it so well. We will reserve it for another time. I think this Sunday is the time, because it’s another gift that I can share with you, and I hope that you will be blessed by it as well. It’s called the Canticle of the Turning, and I put the words up, not so you feel like you have to sing, but so you can see them.

My soul cries out with a joyful shout
That the God of my heart is great
And my spirit sings of the Wondrous things
That you bring to the ones who wait
You fixed your sight on your servant’s plight
And my weakness you did not spurn
So from east to west shall my name be blest
Could the world be about to turn?

We all have gifts. I think I’ve said that probably a hundred times in this sermon.

I can sing, I play guitar, I make little people out of wooden pieces, and I do some art. I like to think that my presence can be a gift sometimes, depending on the situation. You all have gifts, whether it’s a smile, whether it’s a hug, whether it’s the amazing cookies that you bake. Anything that you do, the crocheting or knitting, the patches that you make for your quilts, the garden that you grow out back, we all have them. The world needs them. The world needs all of the gifts. We need diversity. We need difference. Because without it, there are things that are missing.

I have one more song to share with you, and it’s a different kind of song. It’s called Hey Moon, and it’s sung from the perspective of the Star. I heard it a couple of years ago, and it actually made me choke up. It talks about how we’re here for a reason.

Love is our theme for this fourth Sunday in Advent, and that seems like something we shouldn’t have to define, but right now I feel like we do.

I decided to define love by saying what it is not. It is called a negative argument. Love is not violence against someone who has different beliefs or values from us. Love is not violence against when we see our brothers and sisters of any faith or no faith hurt. That is not love. When we see it, and we remain silent, that is not love. Love is not cruel words meant to create hardship or pain for another; that is not love.

Then the scripture from 1 Corinthians came back to me, because we need a little bit of positivity here. “Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable; it keeps no record of wrongs; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-6

Our God has made it quite clear that the expectation of us is that we love. We are to love our God. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves. We are to love the stranger among us. We are to love our enemy, and we are to love ourselves. That is the commandment of God. We are to be people of love doing loving acts for others.

The Isaiah scripture today, Isaiah 7:10-16, was written 3,000 years ago and was written in Hebrew. Then in about the third century BCE, it was translated into Greek.

A lot of people didn’t speak Hebrew; the religious leaders spoke Hebrew, the scholars spoke Hebrew, but the people spoke Greek because that was the language of business at that time. There was a translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew into Greek. That was called the Septuagint translation. Sep meaning seven, it was the translation of the 70 because it was translated by 72 translators, six from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. So remember, like that’s still important. The 12 tribes of Israel were still important, so six people from each tribe got to come in, and they translated it, and when they translated it, they wrote, “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel.”

However, it wasn’t really accurate to the Hebrew. Fortunately, the NRSV, which is the Bible that you have in your pews, instead of using the Septuagint, went back to the original Hebrew. This is also a whole lot closer to what I have. “Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son.” – Matthew 1:23.

Do you see the differences? One, she’s a virgin. It’s just she’s young. One place, she shall conceive, future tense. The other one, she’s already pregnant a thousand years before Jesus is born. I just told you all of that to say that this is one of the scriptures that Christians, particularly some Jewish people, feel that we have co-opted to make it fit Jesus. Because Matthew used the Septuagint when he wrote, so that is what was in Matthew’s gospel, and they like that to match. People want you to read it in Matthew and then go back to Isaiah and find it.

Scripture’s messy, folks, it’s not clean. It’s precise. But today is Joseph’s day, and I don’t wanna take time away from Joseph. I want you to think for a moment what you know about Joseph.

I’m going to guess that you know Joseph as the one who did what the angel told him to do. He gets lifted as that he gets celebrated. The angel told him not to be afraid, take Mary, and that’s what he did. But let’s give Joseph a little bit more credit. Not that, you know, if an angel shows up, listen to him, but we don’t all get angels. We can all sit and think about what the right thing to do is.

Joseph and Mary were not two teenagers who fell in love, and this was all wonderful. That’s not what marriage was in the first century. Mary was a liability to her family, especially when she was pregnant without being married. But Mary was a liability even before she was pregnant. She was a drain on the family system, so she needed to go. She needed to be married off. Where’s the dowry? Where’s the money for her? Let’s get her out. She’s of marrying age. Let’s get this woman married.

Joseph is portrayed as such a nice, innocent young man. What was good about that was that they did not portray the harshness of how the people lived under Roman oppression. I tell you that, but they depicted it well because the people were really struggling with poverty under Roman oppression.

But I think Joseph really struggled with this as he followed the angel. He looked at this situation, and he said, “What does Mary need?” Mary needs to be protected, and she needs security. She needs safety and security. He realized he could provide that. Joseph knew that he could do that. If Mary were pregnant out of wedlock, she would have been killed. That punishment is stoning. She would not have survived. So whether the baby was God’s or not, he was saving a life by taking her as his wife.

I think he just needs credit. Joseph needs credit for being the kind of man who is willing to stand up and say, I choose family. I can choose to be the earthly father of Jesus, and he accepted that choice.

They chose love. In the midst of fear, they chose love against all odds, and they knew that being together was better than being apart.

We are called to choose love.

As I sat with that, what came to me was how I love the church calendar because it is circular or maybe a spiral. We come around to the same stories, and hopefully we grow a little bit. I read the first verses of John’s Gospel on Christmas Eve and on Good Friday. I know that you probably didn’t pick up on that, so I’ll clue you in to that.

But I went back to see how I was closing my sermons in Lent, and this is what I said in Lent. One of the pieces that I love about the church year is that Lent and Holy Week tie to Advent and Christmas. So to complete the circle, how we treat others matters. What is the most loving thing to do now?

To quote Stephen Sills, love the ones you’re with, and remember from the wisdom of Stephen Sondheim, and maybe this will come back to you. Careful. The things you say. Children will listen. Careful the things you do, children will see. Learn. Children may not obey, but children will listen. Children will look to you for which way to turn, to learn what to be careful before you say, listen to me, children will listen.

I pride myself on caring and doing for others who have needs, and I will do that at my own expense.

So, this year I’m finding it hard to be joyful coming into Christmas, but fortunately, we are celebrating and including those who are not as joyful at Christmas.

As I was putting this together, I thought, “What I’m feeling is tired, worn, and weary.” If you are with me, I invite you to join me in singing Precious Lord, Take My Hand. I was really drawn by the fact that we don’t sing this in Advent. This is not one of the times that we usually sing this, but pay attention to the lyrics as we do.

“Precious Lord, take my hand. I am tired. I am weak. I am worn. Take my hand. Precious Lord”

I think that also could have been the song of the Israelites when they had been moved into exile.

Although it’s not clear what timeframe Exodus 35 is actually in, there’s some contention about when it was actually written. If it was written during the Babylonian exile by the writer who wrote first Isaiah, or if it was written sometime later. But it was written to people who felt lost, who felt like they needed their God, and it was written to give them hope. I don’t know if you noticed this, but I’m going to help you see this in this scripture.

But for the most part, the verbs are in the future tense. This is a part of Advent too; it’s happened and yet not yet. It says that Christ was born today, and we might feel like “ooh, but not.” Because that’s what Advent is. It’s this already, and yet, not yet. That’s where we are. To these people, Isaiah wrote, and it said,  “…for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert“ – Isaiah 35:6. That’s future tense. It will happen.

Water is a symbol of life. It’s one of the elements that we cannot survive without. The prophet is reminding us that God will provide life. Life will happen. You’ll rejoice again. You will have reason to rejoice again. Even if you aren’t right now. Because you don’t need to tell people to rejoice when they’re rejoicing. But God is about doing something new in the future. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the holy way. It’s not there yet. They don’t know how they’re going to get home yet, but they are going to get home. There is hope in the future. God will create a way in which we will experience the gift of God’s joy, even if we don’t feel it right now.

I thought it was interesting to hear this from a couple of different perspectives, so I’m gonna give you a few variations of this. Isaiah 35:1-10 says to strengthen, but this is the present tense. So, for today, it has shifted to the present tense, “Strengthen the weak hands and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful of heart, “Be strong. Do not fear! Here is your God” – Isaiah 35:3-4. If I go to the Hebrew, TaNaK, which is their Bible, it reads this way. “Strengthen your drooping arms and steady your tottering knees.” For me, maybe it’s because I’m getting that new knee that just made me smile to steady my tottering knees. Yes, please. The inclusive Bible wrote it this way, “Say to all of those who are faint of heart, take courage.” Not to be strong, but take courage. I hear those differently.

There’s good news in the future. For now, we are not to be afraid of that classic phrase that is said so many times, Do not be afraid. Fear not all those different variations, but that is the most common phrase in the Bible. God wants us. God wants our trust. So, for today, can we have hope? Even if life isn’t wonderful, even if you feel displaced, forgotten outside. For today, know that God is here and that whatever is, whatever struggles are in your life, God will make a way.

I think that leads us right into Mary.

I chose this year to give you the picture of our Lady of Guadalupe, who’s actually quite ornate because she’s an icon for worship. But Mary was living through a time that was not a good time for the Jewish people. They were under Roman oppression. Rome was taxing them into poverty. They had soldiers who were not kind to them, and the people were afraid. The people were really afraid.

And yet, to this young teenager, God comes and says, “Do not be afraid for God is doing a new thing, and you will have a child, and that child will become the savior of the world and will change everything.” In Luke 1:52, Mary says, “He has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly.”

It’s very much a justice-oriented piece. We say that we are about social justice. We wanna be compassionate and empathetic. Our God is compassionate. Our God cares about those who feel left out at the margins. Those for whom maybe it’s a health issue, maybe it’s a family issue, maybe it’s a relationship issue, maybe it’s an economic issue. Whatever it is that’s going on, God cares. God asks us, like Mary, to just hold a space.

Our job in Advent is to watch and wait. It’s not a passive wait. It’s not that we’ll just go back to bed and then, when something happens, we’ll get up. It is a, we’re paying attention, waiting. It’s a waiting with attention, with focus. What is God doing? What do we see happening around us? What are the graces that we are given for the cashier who is kind, who’s actually happy to be working because that means they’re gonna be able to pay their bills this week? Can we find that grace and patience for the grumpy customer in front of us, who we wish would just go away? Or maybe if we see them, then when we get to the cashier, maybe we will be kinder. How can we affect those around us in ways that bring more hope, peace, love, and joy?

Well, today we are focused on the joy, and I called this sermon Singing Out Our Joy.

Even Isaiah 35 is written like a song. It’s very lyrical, so now I’m gonna invite you to sing again, but this time we’re gonna sing another song that you know well, which is called Give Thanks. And I want you to pay attention to these words too, because I think they also support Mary’s song.

Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He’s given
Jesus Christ, His Son

Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He’s given
Jesus Christ, His Son

And now let the weak say, “I am strong”
Let the poor say, “I am rich”
Because of what the Lord has done for us

This is not the end. God is still at work in our world and bringing about new life. We may be tottering, but all we need to do is to watch, wait, and be attentive to all that God is doing.

 I’m gonna start in a different way by letting this be the announcement where I tell you that I’m getting a new knee, that’s my Christmas present to myself.

After Christmas, I’ll get a new knee, and I’ll be gone the month of January. You’ll have other people filling in for me, but I actually bring that up because I think it applies to these scriptures. There is nothing like physical therapy to burst your illusion that you are in good shape,

I actually think that’s what these scriptures are meant to do. They are to burst our illusion that we are spiritually mature. They’re a reminder that we all have growth and the ability to grow if we’re just pushed a little bit. That’s the position that I wanna take from these scriptures.

The first one was Romans 15:4-6, and I read this with the John the Baptist piece from Matthew 3:1-12. And I’m not sure how these pieces fit together.

I thought the Romans text was really affirming and uplifting until I looked at it again, and it is still affirming and uplifting, but I broke it down. It talks about what God wants. The combination of his steady constant calling and the warm personal counsel in scripture to come to characterize us. Do you notice something about what that says? I mean, it is uplifting and affirming. It’s also future tense. It’s not now. So it’s not describing the people as they are.

It’s describing how the people can become, just like I can become stronger and ready for my surgery, we can become more mature in our faith. We can stretch and grow ourselves into a closer relationship with Jesus, God, the Spirit, or whatever word you wanna use. Even this Roman scripture, although I think I hear it in a better light, it’s still pushing us. Maybe it’s a gentle push.

Then we have this scripture from John the Baptist. I’m going to do part of a deep dive with you, and hopefully I don’t go too far down this well, and we don’t lose anybody in the process. But, I have struggled, not with the whole scripture, I’m fine with the character of John the Baptist. It’s a story we read about on the second Sunday of Advent every year. I don’t have an issue with who he is or what he does, but when he starts calling people brood of vipers and talking about cutting down trees and unquenchable fire, well, you know, that just makes me uncomfortable.

I figured I had to make peace with this scripture. I had to wrestle with it because that’s the thing about scripture. The scripture that makes us uncomfortable is probably the scripture we need to spend more time with because there’s something there that we didn’t see the first time, and what I’ve learned is that this is so full of symbolism.

It starts with the words “in those days.” Why that is important is because that’s what the prophets, Jeremiah and Joel, used to use in those days. It’s a reminder of the prophets. Then, in the days of the prophets, the people were not following God the way they were meant to. The role of the prophet is to bring the people back to God. So right away, we hear that John is gonna be a type of prophet. He’s gonna try to bring the people back into a relationship with God. Then we hear that it happens in the wilderness.

Do you remember the wilderness? Do you remember what happened in the wilderness? People are uncomfortable. We don’t like the wilderness. We don’t wanna go there because the wilderness invites us to grow. Because in the wilderness, that’s where God meets us. Not always in the ways that we expect, but in ways that ultimately help us, and even as uncomfortable as the wilderness is, God provides in the wilderness. Remember God providing water and manna. God is there. God is close in the wilderness. When we are feeling most uncomfortable, God is closest to us.

Then we get John’s clothing. This is one of the only times that we get someone’s outfit described to us in this detail. We hear exactly what he’s wearing and exactly what he’s eating. That’s not normal, but it connects us. It connects John with another particular prophet, and that is Elijah. Elijah also wore the skin of a camel and had a belt around his waist. So that is a clue. All of this, these are things that we just read, and we go right past because we don’t have that Jewish perspective that the first listeners had. They hear this described about John, and they’re like, oh, that’s like Elijah. This is the new Elijah. Again, a prophet is coming to help the people, saying that the kingdom of heaven is coming near and that God is about to do something big.

Are we paying attention? Last week it was Stay awake, and are you watching? Are you looking at what’s happening around you? Are you watching for what God is doing?

I think that’s a good question for us today because some of us may feel like we’re in a bit of a wilderness, but that means God is closer, and what is God doing in this time?

Do you remember the Jordan River? Do you know what the significance of the Jordan River is? Well, that was the river that Joshua brought the people out of the desert and into the Promised Land. So when you cross the Jordan, you were to encounter the promised land.

There’s a new land coming. No, not literally. This is all symbolic. There’s a new time coming. There’s a new way of living that is coming, and we are being invited into it, and then we get to the brood of vipers because it’s there. As much as I would like to take it out, I can’t. But the brood of vipers is the Pharisees and Sadducees. Do you remember who they are? They’re the religious leaders. They’re the ones who are saying, “That’s not how we do church. We do church like this. We always do this, and you have to do it this way.” They took the laws of Moses, but they also created some rules for people to follow. There’s a temple tax, but they charged 10% more, because they wanted to be paid too. They knew better, but they took advantage of the people. That’s why they were a brood of vipers. Because they didn’t really encourage people into relationships with God. They were too busy minding the rules.

I’ve heard them in preaching class, called a park bench that if you need to get off the trail, you can sit down here for a minute. So, here’s your park bench. Last night after I put the Christmas tree up and put the lights on it. I sent my son a text and said, “How does it look?” He lives across the street, and he could see it. He said it looks great. I said, “But I broke the rule. I put white lights up, and then it didn’t have enough. So I put a string of colored lights with the white lights.” Crazy, right? That teenage thing in me, it’s still there. And you know what he said back to me, “Mom, there are no rules.” I almost said, are you an anarchist?

But does it matter? And that was the point with the Pharisees. The Pharisees were making up insignificant rules that actually caused harm to people. When they charge them more than what the temple tax was meant to be, then that caused suffering. They were not helping the people. They were hurting their own people, and that’s why they got called a brute of vipers because they knew better, but that’s not what they did.

Then we get into the acts, and at that very end, we hear about how Jesus is coming with his winnowing fork to separate the wheat from the chaff, and the wheat’s gonna go in the granary, and the chaff is gonna go in the unquenchable fire.

That is an illusion that Matthew likes a lot. He is dualistic. You’re either in, or you’re out, and there’s nothing in between. For him, it’s the same dualism that he uses in Matthew 25, where he says there’s gonna be sheep who will go into the kingdom, and there will be goats, and do you remember where the goats go? Uncle Fire. Do you see how things are coming together? When we look at scripture like that, it just puts it all in a different perspective, at least for me.

It helped me to get to the point with this scripture that I wasn’t angry at Matthew for writing it this way anymore. It’s this idea that God has come. We’re in this time where God has already done all these wonderful things, and God is also still working and something more, something different, something else. is still calling to us.

Are we paying attention? Are we paying attention to the edges of society? Are we paying attention to those who are struggling?

This month for our inclusive church, we are looking at the people for whom Christmas is not the same, because there are people who are struggling.

They may be grieving the loss of a loved one, but they may also be grieving the loss of an income, an identity, a relationship at home at Christmas in particular, more than any other time of the year.

You may love your Hallmark movies, and they have a place as long as we lift up the people who aren’t living in a Hallmark movie so they don’t feel pushed out or like they don’t belong. Coming home to the family at Christmas may not be a great reconciliation and forgiveness. That’s not true for everybody.

So how do we make room for everybody? How do we say it’s okay not to be all excited about the season and all of the parties and festivities that our culture really says you have to participate in, and if you’re not, what’s wrong with you? You didn’t put a tree up this year? Instead of making that sound like a judgment, can we say, “Oh, you didn’t. How are you? Do you wanna talk?”

Listening to what’s going on in people’s lives, that’s our Compassion Team, and we’re starting a new thing in January where we’re gonna have regular sessions that you can just come in, check in, and find out about what’s going on in other people’s lives, too. Not from the gossipy kind of place, but just to hold them in your prayers. That’s the idea.

So I think John’s point is that we can be on the wrong side of the issue. We can be thinking about whether you put all white or colored lights on the tree, or we can be thinking about how many parties are on your calendar and how busy you are this season. Or we can just step back and take some quiet time to watch and see what God’s up to this year, because God is moving.

We can be better than what we were yesterday. We can be a better version of ourselves. All of us can experience that Spiritual stretching that comes with a little spiritual therapy from John. Or maybe to use a symbol from our contemporary culture, a little Ebenezer Scrooge, right? We can all have a reminder of who we have been and who we can be, and all we have a chance to change.

So at this time, stay awake because being awake is the resistance against the empire. Because John was resisting the empire at that time. He was outside, not dealing with them up close, but reminding people that there is another way of living. Slowly, day by day, we can take our souls through the exhaustion, complicity, or disengagement, and allow ourselves to be stretched.

Watch what is happening, see more clearly, speak more truthfully, and tend to and welcome those who are being pushed aside, frightened, or taken away. This is who we are called to be.

 Has anybody told you that this is the first Sunday of Advent? Advent is all about watching and waiting.

The gospel reading, Matthew 24:36-44, this morning dealt with that topic almost exclusively. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like waiting and watching for whatever I’m waiting for. Makes the waiting even worse. I can still hear my grandmother from the kitchen while I was making dinner, “A watched pot never boils.” But what Jesus is saying in this passage runs in contrast to my perception of waiting. It isn’t watching a pot until it boils, or that will never boil. It isn’t twiddling my thumbs while I wait for my child to get ready for Sunday morning church. No, no, no, no. This waiting and watching is active.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in seminary about reading the Bible, it is to put scripture into its proper context. That can mean learning the historical context or using literary criticism to study the structure or rhetorical devices at play. It can mean checking out what surrounds a particular passage to track down the bigger picture of what the writer’s trying to communicate. In the case of this morning’s scripture, the sections before this passage seemed to follow along the theme of being ready, and the ones that follow, particularly in Matthew 25, seem to deal with what is done with the waiting time. This says something about verses 36 through 44 that might not be obvious when the passage is read in isolation. I think that it says that this passage is about being ready and being active while we’re waiting.

Dr. O Wesley Allen, Jr., of the working preacher, shares this view. He says, “Living faithfully in the already not yet of Christian discipleship does not mean that we can just rest in God’s grace. It means that God gives us all the more responsibility for doing God’s will on Earth as it is done in heaven.” And he says that this is a gift from God. We don’t have to be bored while we’re waiting.

Alan goes on to say, “Having already been transformed by the Christ event, the church is invited to participate in the transformation of the world, yet still in process. There are places where justice and equality have not yet been found. Places where hunger and thirst have not yet been alleviated. Places where school children die in senseless acts of violence. Places where the planet is not yet being treated with respect. These are the kinds of things that we are called to work on while we wait. This is what we do with our talents, how we steward the gifts that God has given us. And if we’re engaged in the work, chances are we won’t be caught sleeping.”

This Sunday, we lit a candle for hope. This year it seems more important than some others that we spend some time thinking about and looking at hope.

I’m not sure who said it, and I couldn’t track down the source of the quote, but it strikes me as true that it is often in the dark that the light shines its brightest.

Two weeks ago, I had the honor of preaching for a chapel service at the seminary. I was asked to share that particular week because Thursday, the 20th, was Transgender Day of Remembrance. I asked Pastor Kathryn if I could share with you a little from that sermon. A few weeks ago, I was confronted with a situation in which someone connected to Apostles had learned something about me that upset them and made them uncomfortable. They shared this with Pastor Kathryn, and she shared it with me, along with many other feelings that I had. When I learned of this, I was most concerned that this situation would negatively impact the congregation’s vote to become open and affirming.

I know this congregation has been working on this for quite some time, and I did not want to be the cause of its rejection. The world is a scary place right now for a lot of people. For some of us, I think it feels maybe a bit like what it felt like to be a Christian in the early days of the church. We are seen as a threat to the establishment. Our very existence is a rejection of everything the old guard has fought tooth and nail to maintain. We see on the news almost every day the disappearance of those who dare to dream of a better world and future for themselves and their families. We have watched as history has been scrubbed from sidewalks and libraries, though it seems new to some of us, as it is the first time we are seeing this with our own eyes.

To many of us, it is just more of the same. The LGBTQIA+ community has lived with violence and censorship for as long as anyone can remember. Every year on November 20th, we gather to remember specifically transgender lives who have been lost over the past few years. I have been involved in planning and leading such remembrance services. Last year, as part of an outdoor service, we lit candles and read the names of people who had lost their lives since the previous year. It was cold and windy, and the candles were having a lot of trouble staying lit without prompting. People began relighting candles from one another and moving close to closer to each other, to close the circle and block the wind. It was a beautiful demonstration of the power of community, and it gave many of us hope. Not only did the candles stay lit, but the light grew larger, and the bodies huddled close together provided warmth to all who were present.

I wanna share part of a song with you that I wrote about that experience, um, and that I shared recently in chapel.

“Live in harmony. Money is with both the rich and the poor. Don’t despise the outcast, or so journey be humble, meek, and gentle folk seek justice in an unjust world. It is good for whom? Mourn and those who have gone ahead. We must gather around the weaker ones and take up the banners of our dead. So gather around the flames and protect them. Though they may be small. And gently rise and softly call goodnight and hope be with you all. As the night grows dark and the winds blow wild, we cannot despair. Vulner one is free until all are free until justice rolls like a mighty way and sin. It fell into my mind that I should rise, and you should not. I’ll gently rise and softly call goodnight and hope be with you all. So gather around the flicking flames and protect them, though they may be small. And gently rise and softly call goodnight and hope be with you all. And gently rise and softly call goodnight and hope be with you.”

Two weeks ago, here in this church, you all lit a candle.

You declared your commitment to be an inclusive refuge, just like your mission statement says. Instead of watching for the pot to see if it would boil, you turned up the heat and got to work. Still watching. Still waiting, but actively joining in God’s work rather than twiddling your thumbs.

God is here. God is at work. God is still speaking in the already not yet. Are you listening? Are you watching? And will you join God in the work of waiting?

This is Epiphany Sunday.

Technically tomorrow is Epiphany. It is always on January 6th. It is the 12th day of Christmas. If you know the song, 12 days of Christmas, tomorrow is the 12th day. In the Eastern Christian church, tomorrow is Christmas.

When my seminary class did our cross-cultural to Turkey we got there on January 2nd. On January 6th, when we went to church, we watched their Christmas pageant with their children, because they were celebrating Christmas day.

Not so much in the U.S. But we like to still lift it up. Sometimes it is a Sunday where we talk about the Magi because the Magi did not get there at the same time that the shepherds were there. Things just didn’t work out quite that way. We just like to put it together in a neatly packaged story.

But, today I chose this reading from Luke because we are in the Gospel of Luke for our lectionary this year.

I love this reading about Simeon and Anna. I think it’s a lovely story. So, that’s the one that I thought I wanted to bring up today. And as I was doing my readings recently, a story came up for me about the Maasai people.

The Maasai people are nomadic people who live in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are herders, and they have cattle, sheep, and goats, and they move based on feeding their livestock. Because they move around, they meet each other at different times. Other people that are part of their tribe. The greeting that they always do when they meet another person, another messiah is, “How are the children?”

I just want you to sit on that question for a minute. The answer that they’re hoping for is the children are well because the Messiah people understand that the children are the most vulnerable in their society and if the children are being cared for, then everyone is being cared for.

The Maasai tribe understands that even if you don’t have a child, the well-being of the children is your responsibility. Everyone takes responsibility for the well-being of the children.

I just wonder if that’s not something we should think about. As a congregation for 2025, I’m suggesting that we become the beloved community that would be concerned about the well-being of the children.

Think about our community. Think about our country. Could we answer that the children are well?

We don’t know why Simeon and Anna came up to this child when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus into the temple for his dedication. It was part of the law that the firstborn son was to be dedicated to God, to the Lord. So, they did this.

One of the first early ones is in the Bible, and there’s a good bit made about it was when Hannah dedicated Samuel. Hannah also was one who had prayed for a child, and then a child was given to her, and she dedicated Samuel to God. But here, Joseph and Mary come to the temple, they’re following the law.

Luke is reminding us that yes, they are Jewish. They are Jewish and in good order, right? They know the law. They are following the custom, the tradition. They’re bringing this child to be dedicated. It’s also for Mary’s purification. That’s part of it, too, so that she will be considered clean again.

But Simeon and Anna come up to this child and then Simeon sees something in this child. There is something different about this child that we know as Jesus. In their language, it would have been Yeshua, which means the Lord saves. His name means the Lord saves.

And then we have this part, “Now let your servants go in peace for my eyes have seen the salvation” – Luke 2:29.

It’s called the song of Simeon and I read it every at every funeral. It’s the commendation prayer. That’s the song of Simeon. The note de Midas is the Latin for it, meaning it is the dismissing. You are now dismissing that as Simeon’s. Call of liberation, his song of liberation. He no longer feels that he is under Roman at the Roman empire. His soul is at peace because he has met the Lord, the Lord’s salvation. He is just a member of the Lord or a slave to the Lord, not to the Roman empire any longer, and his soul can depart in peace.

It’s quite powerful. I hope the next time you attend a funeral here, which I hope is not anytime soon, you listen for that. Because I almost always do it. I don’t know how many other people do that prayer at funerals, but it’s a beautiful prayer about how God is making the world right. Even if that means that we have lost someone, we are at peace. It’s acknowledging that we are at peace as Simeon was at peace. Now that he has met this baby.

Anna agrees. Anna just supports what Simeon has said. Usually in Luke, he tends to favor the women. Luke tends to give women voices. And in this one, Simeon gets the voice. Simeon gets to say everything and Anna just goes along with it and supports it. But it’s a lovely story.

So, if we have been redeemed, if our salvation has come, if the light of the world has come, and now it is our job to carry that light into the world, what does that look like?

How do we carry the light into the world? Well, that’s where I thought Colossians 3:12-17 tied nicely to this. I boiled it down to just a few items.

So being the light of the world means clothing ourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. What if those were our top virtues? What if that is what we valued? Compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. That to me is being the light of the world.

It’s not easy, and we always fail. Sometimes we’re better than others. But we have the ability to remind ourselves that we also get forgiven. Because God does not expect perfection. God expects that we will try. That we will do it to the best of our ability.

So we are called to be the light. Remember, the light is what all of creation needs. If the sun went away the rest of us would wither. Everything needs light to grow and to be healthy. However, if we have too much light, we’re blinded, right? Too much light is blinding. We can’t see anything. So we have to be enough light without being overpowering.

But the light that we are to be is to be a light that attracts others to shine.

We want them to say, “I want to know what they know. I want to live like that. I want that peace. I want that love. I want to be that compassionate and kind. That patient.” I know that’s one of my challenges. I could always be more patient with myself and others.

So how will you be the light of the world in your place? We can’t affect the whole world, but you can affect the people around you.

How will you be the light of the world in 2025? And how are the children? Are they well?

When I think about Humility, this verse always comes to my mind, “To act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8

They’re the words of the prophet Micah. When I was thinking about the story of Christmas, I thought, where was humility involved? I decided to start talking about Charles Dicken’s character, Ebenezer Scrooge. Because I think Ebenezer needed to learn a bit about humility. He was one who thought that the be all for him was his money. He put all his faith in his ability to live the way he wanted to live, albeit tightly so that he had more money. Money was going to be his salvation. Think about that.

I think there are some other people who look at money as their salvation. Certainly it helps, but money does not save us. And that was the lesson he learned, that although he could control many things, he could not control in life.

Actually, I think being humble is one of those pieces of our faith journey that is very difficult for us.

Because if we’re honest we’re a bit like Ebenezer and we want to do our own lives. We love being independent. We don’t want to have to rely on anyone. We want to do it our way. We have our own agendas, time frames, and lists to be checked. It’s Christmas and I found myself obsessing about the food needing to be made and the gifts needing to be wrapped. It’s part of the season and our culture certainly encourages that feeling, but none of that is about God.

God is asking for a very different reaction from us. I often use the 23rd Psalm in funerals to remind us that our God is the one who wants to run our lives. Who will take us to those gentle streams and those, those fields, but will also sit us down at a table with our enemies. It was not meant to be an easy life, but God is looking for our attention.

As I was thinking about this, I thought about the second and third steps of the 12-step program of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), which, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, created not as a religious organization, but they recognize that part of what we have to do is know that we are not the be all and end all that we think we are. It is not all about us, and there is a higher power to whom we answer. We call that Jesus Christ, God, or the Holy Spirit. Other people might just say the divine, the creator, but there’s someone who is organizing the world and trying to influence the world. It is more than any of us. We have to look at that in our lives and we have to make the decision.

It’s a choice every day. Every moment of every day to stop focusing on ourselves and turn our attention to what God would want for us, what Christ wants for our lives.

What is Christ calling us to do? The wording I’ve been using is, what’s the next most loving thing to do? Because I think that’s what Jesus calls us to. What is the loving decision, the loving choice in each of the moments?

Today we are looking at the character of Joseph.

Our scripture today is Matthew 1:18-25 and it’s Matthew’s version of the Christmas story. Remember, Matthew had a very definite goal. Matthew wants to make sure that we know that Jesus is Jewish and is in the line of David.

When you start Matthew 1, the first 17 verses is all of his genealogy, which goes all the way back to Genesis, but connects Jesus to David. Interestingly, through Joseph, but connects the dots for us and then gives us this image of this earthly father. Stepfather is the language we would use today, who will come into Jesus’s life and guide him in a loving way.

It wasn’t the decision he had to make. Divorce was an option. We think of divorce as after people are married and that may not be a good translation either because they weren’t married. She was promised to him. There was a contract. Because that’s how marriage worked at that time. So, he could have said this pregnancy makes it null and void and that would be our language of a contract, right? The contract’s null and void. I don’t need to marry her, I can break this contract and walk away. I don’t need to be part of this.

But had he done that, he would have left Mary in a very desperate position, because at that time you needed to have a male to have any kind of power or money. She would have been destitute and very likely she could have been stoned because they would have thought that she had an affair with a married man, so it could have cost her her life.

But that wasn’t the decision he made. He made the decision for love. He chose life instead of death. And that’s at the heart of this story. I think that God wants us to choose love and to choose life.

Unfortunately, I have to name that this feels very political right now. So, I also need to say that as I affirm choosing love and choosing life, that is not necessarily at someone else’s expense.

The abortion conversation has become politicized and it’s a health decision and they are all individual cases. We don’t know what is going on in the lives of people, but we can still advocate for love and for life. I think we can hold both of those pieces because advocating for life means you advocate for the entire life of the child. Not just it’s birth.

So as we approach the end of the year, I want you to consider what challenges you met this year with God’s strength. How did God help you get through this year?

Where did God help you adapt, pivot, or show resilience as you may have met some struggle in your life? What small or big milestone can you honor without ranking or judging? Where did you act with love? Where did you show humility, instead of insisting that it be your way?

Those are big questions for us to sit with. So, I hope that between now and the end of the year, you take some time to consider that. It really does come down to that old Deuteronomy, where Moses looks at the people and he says, “life is laid out before you choose life or choose death.”

The decision is yours. We can’t avoid death. But we can avoid some of the heartache, struggle and the pain. Because we cause a lot of our own issues. We can avoid that by choosing love, choosing humility, and choosing life.

What do you think joy is?

We heard from the kids. It was pretty clear that joy was connected to happiness for them. Is there anything that you could add to that?

I think joy is more than happiness. I think it’s different, even, than happiness. It’s connection, love, being home, a big smile, something that can be found, the feeling after helping someone and the absence of fear.

I don’t know how many of you have seen Inside Out. Inside Out’s a cute Pixar movie about the emotions that go on within us. They’re animated and that is a picture of Joy. Joy is just happiness on steroids. And part of the storyline is that Joy tries to run this little girl’s life, and she finds that the little girl is absolutely miserable because Joy won’t let her experience anything else except ultimate joy.

That’s not the way life is. You know, when someone hurts you, your feeling is not joy like that. The little girl on the right also can have joy, but is expressing it very differently.

When I think about joy, joy is a deeper emotion for me. It’s not just about being happy.

There’s connection and it involves doing something for someone else. It involves something that makes us feel like home. Something that is deeper, that we can find within us. Not something exterior, but something interior. Happiness is a feeling about us. You can be happy because you have a bowl of ice cream, but that’s not this deeper joy.

The deeper joy often comes from doing something selfless. Something that’s directed towards someone else. You can be grateful because you can help someone and it’s not all about us. Whereas, I think happiness is very self driven. Very, “this is what makes me happy.” But, this is what gives me joy, when I’m doing things for others, and when I’m focused on somebody other than myself.

I think that’s how Joy ties in to Philippians 4:4-7. Think about how is this directing us?

“Love one another with mutual affection; Outdo one another in showing honor. Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; practice hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you. Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.” – Philippians 4:4-7 Abbreviated.

Is that about us or is that about others? To me, that’s about others. It’s about the experience of others. Although prayer could be about us too, right?

Now I want to talk about Luke 1:26-38 which sets us up for Mary and trying to understand who Mary was. That’s part of our challenge today.

If we look at the scripture, it doesn’t really give us a lot. It tells us that she was young, but young was of marrying age at that time. It tells us that she was engaged or promised. I almost hate using the word engaged, because when we think about engagement, we think about two people who have found each other and love each other and whereas promised, I think gets a little bit closer to what relationships were still like at that time. Marriages were still more contractual. Love probably wasn’t involved. But at that time, that wasn’t as important as having a male heir to inherit what one has, leave one’s legacy, one’s name, those kind of things.

We know also that Mary has a cousin, Elizabeth. Elizabeth is the one that she runs to after this encounter with the angel Gabriel. Whether that’s because she wants to have somebody to talk about this experience with, someone that might understand. But, it also raises questions because there’s an absence of information.

Quite a few years ago, I did a sermon from Mary’s perspective, and I wrote it that Mary’s parents were not pleased. They were not keen on this whole, “I’m pregnant by the Holy Spirit” piece. But, this week I heard two ideas. They’re just things to help us open our minds.

One said that Mary was an orphan. I never thought about that. But, maybe that’s why there’s no mention of Mary’s parents. Maybe Mary didn’t have parents. We don’t know that. We don’t know why Mary was alone and went only to her cousin. We don’t know.

It was an imperfect situation with Mary. She’s young. She’s not married. This could really mess her up. But, she also is a person of faith. So, she does say yes. That was the other piece that I read, was that it had to be a woman who wasn’t married yet, unlike Elizabeth. Because a woman who’s married at that time would have had to ask her husband for permission before she said yes.

I think that’s a powerful piece that we don’t think about. A woman at that time would not have been able to make that decision on her own. But Mary was. And Mary did have faith in God. Mary did believe. And if Mary was alone in the world, I could see where wanting to be loved and needing someone to love is a strong reason to say yes to something that others would say is crazy.

Would you say yes if an angel came to you tonight and told you that you could become pregnant? Males, how would you feel if your wife came to you and said, “the spirit has come to me and told me that I’m going to bear a child.” That’s not an easy thing to put your mind around.

But I remember being a teenager who felt alone, who needed to be loved, who needed someone to love. When we look at our teenagers, we need to be thinking that way, too.

We need to make sure that they feel loved. That they feel accepted for who they are and remind them that they are children of God. That God loves them just as much as God loves everyone else.

So, Mary said yes. Mary said yes to living because living doesn’t mean it’s going to be all happy and joyful. The joy of living means going through the hard stuff, but knowing that you don’t go through it alone. Even if you physically appear to be alone, God is with you. The spirit is with you and it takes an inner sense of knowing. Looking deeper than the physical circumstances around us to know that, but it is in knowing that where we can find joy.

We’re living through an interesting time where there’s a lot of people who are not feeling joy right now. There is a lot of fear, a lot of worry and anxiety about the future on many levels in many different ways.

We are called to be that light and to share that joy that we know that comes from our relationship with Christ. We are called to be the light in the darkness right now.

I was in two rooms with people near death, and I was in conversation with someone. Who is telling me that if this one thing doesn’t happen, then life isn’t worth living. I’m trying to say, there is more to living.

This one thing may not work out, no matter how hard you pray. And they are praying with all their might. But sometimes we have to just rest in the joy of knowing that we are loved because life has hard spots and we are called to be the light in the darkness.

On this second Sunday of Advent, we’re talking about waiting. I’m wondering, how well do you wait?

Think of the places and times you’ve had to wait. How good are you at that? At waiting in long lines? Waiting for news about a test? Waiting for something to happen? I know there’s quite a few young people among us who are waiting for a special day this month.

We all wait differently, but I think our ability to wait has a lot to do with how much patience we have. When I was thinking about patience, I realized that patience is directly correlated with peace. It’s very difficult to find peace if one is not patient. They go together.

One of the paradoxes of Christianity is that we believe Christ has been born and is the Messiah, and yet we don’t fully realize what that means.

Because we haven’t as a world found peace. We’re in this in between space. This paradox is actually the tension between Christianity and Judaism, because we say the Messiah has come. They say, if the Messiah had come, there would not be injustice anymore. There would not be hatred. There would be peace on earth. We have this tension there. What does this peace on earth look like? How do we make that come about?

One of the scriptures that is used this Sunday is about John and the Baptist. One of the pieces that he talks about with the messiah coming is that is that “Every valley shall be lifted up and every mountain and hill made low; the uneven ground shall become level and the rough places a plane” – Isaiah 40:4.

It’s this evening out that is supposed to happen with the messianic age. We don’t have that yet. We’re still on our way towards that.

While we are in this time of waiting, let’s talk about Zachariah a little bit. I think Zachariah and Elizabeth can be a model for us on how it is to wait.

When I think about Zachariah and Elizabeth, for me, it brings up Abraham and Sarah, an older couple who thought that they were beyond childbearing, who suddenly are going to bear a child, because of what God is doing. God is in the midst of this. And he can’t even talk about it. He has to wait in silence, so to speak.

He is able to write, because I wondered about that. I thought, well, can’t he just write this all down? It appears that he doesn’t write anything down until John is born. He writes down his name will be John and then his speech is returned.

But can you imagine having that kind of wonderful news? Maybe a little scary too, right? Could be a little fear in there. Some of us in here are beyond childbearing years. How about if somebody told you you were going to have a child? I enjoy having that grandson that I love to death and then I give him back to his mother.

That’s where they were. They were in this expectancy. Imagine it. This almost but not yet. The paradox.

Then we have Romans 12:18-27. ‘Let love be genuine; hate what is evil; hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not lag in zeal; be ardent in spirit; serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints; pursue hospitality to strangers. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be arrogant, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18 If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

It’s so important that I would challenge you to read it every single day this week. Just keep reading it every day because it is the heart of Christianity. It’s about focusing on love and how can we love others in a better way.

How do we do that? It starts with let love be genuine. It’s not about putting on a mask and being kind. It’s about really being kind, wanting to do that from your heart and reminding yourself each day, what that’s about.

The part we didn’t read the next verse, Romans 12:19, goes into “vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” God will take care of all the other stuff. Our role is to love others, to not get caught up in our stuff, so that we can see the needs of others.

The words we used in raising our children were helpful, thoughtful, and kind. That was their goal. Every day you needed to be helpful, thoughtful, and kind. If we just took that to heart, we would be closer. But I want to encourage you to sit with that.

I know that right now life is difficult. There’s a lot of us that are grieving for many different reasons that life just feels overwhelming. So, I want to share with you this meditation practice. It’s called RAIN.

RAIN is an acronym and it was created by Tara Brock. These are the four steps.

Recognize: What’s going on? Recognize the situation and how you are reacting to it. Recognize, look at your feelings. When something happens, notice your body. Are you clenching up? Do you feel all jittery? What’s happening? Just notice it because in noticing it, it gives you some space to then allow it.

Allow: This is the let it be and let God by allowing it, noticing it and allowing it. We give room for the spirit and the spirit has space and time to work with us. There’s another phrase that says, what we resist persists. So don’t resist it.

Investigate: Be curious, go for it. That will take you from a place of maybe anger or frustration. Be curious, go into that wonder. What’s this about? Why am I feeling like this? What’s going on here?

Nurture: Be kind to yourself too. Give yourself grace. Forgive yourself. Allow God to speak to your heart. Listen to your heart. Because that divine, I often talk about the little bit of the divine that is in each of us. We can learn to hear it. When we practice listening to it. Let’s practice that. Let’s work on those muscles.

When I was preparing last week’s sermon, there was a lot about the muscle of hope. Well, I think there’s a muscle here too, because we only experience peace when we practice peace. We will only find it elsewhere when we have it first within us. If we go looking for peace outside of us. We’re not going to find it.

It has to start here.

So I encourage you to think about that this week. Pay attention to how you’re feeling in the different situations. Allow God and the spirit within you to take care of you so that you can be there for others.

This is our week to begin this period of waiting and watching.

This period is where we look for what new thing is God doing in this world. How is God breaking into our world today? What hope, peace, love, and joy is God bringing?

The thing I was sitting with was this idea of what are we longing for right now? And as I was writing this sermon, my dog came up and pestered me. I thought, I know what she wants. She wants fewer people. It’s been a busy week. She wants fewer people in the house, fewer dogs in the house, and a little bit less noise. Let’s go back to normal, right? Let’s have that normal life again, that simpler life.

But the reality of normal is that we’re using those rose-colored glasses. What we think is normal is more of a dream that probably never existed anyway. We paint everything and smooth out all the edges so that we only remember the good parts and forget all the hard parts. But life is hard. That’s a reality.

We need to remember that the point of coming together is so that we support one another in all of the hard stuff. It can be nice to support one another in the fun stuff and the good stuff. We all like that. But we need one another in the hard stuff and when life gets real.

So, I was thinking about, based on our vision and mission, what are we longing for?

What came to me was compassionate care for creation. Our scripture today (Luke 2:1-3 & Romans 8:18-25) is about creation, and we’re looking to give that compassionate care and to share that with one another, with the world, and with our community.

To try to be there for one another. What does that look like? Well, back in early November, I read this article by Guy Sayles, who is a pastor in Western North Carolina. He wrote about the experience of Hurricane Helene, where the mountains of North Carolina never experienced anything like that before.

What he talked about first was a quote from Mr. Rogers that Mr. Roger’s mother always told him when things were going wrong, “Look for the helpers. There are always helpers.”

Who are the helpers and what are they doing? He started looking around at what was happening in his community, which was devastated. Hurricane Helene was a leveler or an equalizer of sorts. I don’t mean that in a good way. But, it brought the helpers. It brought the religious and the other non-profit volunteers to help. It brought FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers. It brought the North Carolina National Guard and the state and local agencies.

But more than that. It brought neighbors out to help one another. A woman who had rain barrels started tapping off the water so that people had water to flush their toilets. Another neighbor who had a generator put it in their driveway and set it up as a charging station so everybody could come and charge their phones or other devices. Neighbors who had freezers that no longer had electricity started handing out the food because it was going to thaw and go bad.

Guy said people would sit around the generator as their devices were charging and they got to know one another. They learned to trust one another. They became a community. They gave each other hope in the middle of this disaster. They were there for each other. That’s where our hope can come from.

So today we have this letter from Paul.

If you are a regular attendee, you know that I struggle with Paul because he has this circular logic that he uses and you can get very confused. But before I get to that, I do want to talk about the fact that this is Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome. I usually say to the churches in Rome, and I’m afraid that I might be misrepresenting that to you. They didn’t have cathedrals and the Vatican didn’t exist, this was before that.

At the time of Paul’s letters people were gathered in homes and they were of all ages and all economic groups. They were the merchants, the slaves, and even the destitute. They all came together, just like in Acts. They talk about everyone came together and shared as there was need. Kind of like that story about the hurricane. Same idea. These communities would come together and the message of Jesus’s love, the available salvation, and this equalizing love. Everybody was included. It was this inclusiveness that attracted the people and the reason Christianity grew.

So to them, Paul is saying the difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. Some of us know what it’s like to be pregnant. It’s uncomfortable and it’s challenging, but it’s not only around us, it’s within us. I think right now, when I look at the world and I look at us, we want something new. We want something new to come out. We want more justice for people. Not less. We want more inclusivity. We want more freedom, not less. We want more liberty, not less.

Imagine a pregnant person, how we get larger. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us, but that is our hope. That is this thing that God is building among us. But, the longer we wait, the larger we become and the more joyful our expectancy. So something is coming. A real justice with peace that we don’t know what that looks like yet.

But it’s going to be hard to get there. It’s going to involve pain and it’s going to mean that we have to come together and work together to survive it.

As I was walking the dogs yesterday morning, another dog walker had lost his gentle leader.

So this morning I brought him a gentle leader and handed it to him. He said I feel like other dog owners are supporting me. And I said, well, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do? That’s being community. I have something that I no longer need and you need it. Why would I not give it to you? I don’t need anything. You don’t need to buy it from me. I can just give it to you.

Our materialistic consumeristic culture starts to program us where we think that we have to pay for everything and we think that if we own it then it’s worth something and we ought to get something for it. Maybe we can just share this idea of justice.

So do we really long for a better world? Do we really want to figure out more of what this hope that’s coming is about?

Advent is a reflective season where we’re called to think. It’s not by chance that this hits in December as the trees have now let go of their leaves. They’re going into this dormant time. The nights are getting longer. We’re to rest more and take more time to slow down.

And what do we do instead? Fill everything with lights, loud music, and bright colors as we try to ward off the darkness. But if we can accept some of the darkness, we can light a candle. We don’t have to be in the pitch dark, but if we can take the time to stop and to give thanks to God, then to think, to reflect on our days.

Where was I merciful? Where was I loving and where did I fail? Because we all have those moments that aren’t our best.

It’s good for us to think about these and then to listen to our hearts because that’s where the still small voice of God is speaking. That’s where Christ meets us, in the quiet and the listening.

Can we give ourselves some time to do that? To listen deeply for what Christ is calling us to hope and long for. Then watch and wait with patience.
