As part of the Church of the Apostles’ 50th anniversary celebrations, we are thrilled to present a special performance by the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble (PHE) on May 3rd, 2025, at 4 PM. This distinguished community ensemble, composed of auditioned, advanced-level handbell ringers from the greater Philadelphia area, will deliver an unforgettable concert. PHE’s repertoire spans original compositions, classical transcriptions, and diverse musical genres, showcasing their mastery of advanced ringing techniques that go beyond traditional handbell sounds. From percussive effects to poignant echoes and shimmering decrescendos, PHE redefines the character of the instrument. Committed to musical excellence, the ensemble also explores collaborations with other instruments and expands the use of handbells in the performing arts. Through workshops, conferences, and community outreach, PHE promotes the art and education of handbell ringing, encouraging public appreciation. This free concert, generously provided by the Apostles Academy of Arts and Science, will include a free-will offering in lieu of tickets. Husband and wife duo Kevin and Janet bring their expertise in astronomy and music to the stage. Kevin, a former planetarium operator at Lancaster’s North Museum, will showcase stunning images of space, including his own astrophotography and Hubble Telescope images. Janet, a nationally awarded harpist, will set the scene with cosmic-inspired arrangements, featuring classics like “Moondance,” “Stairway to Heaven,” and “Starry, Starry Night.”

The band formed at Albright College, bonding over late-night jam sessions that led to their self-titled debut album, Bad Publicity, released on Good Friday 2024.
